Modern Day Schools in Whiston

Whiston School; School Hill

Following the earlier closure of Whiston Boarding School by 1861, a new facility was built to provide an education to the children of Whiston; which it did successfully for many decades.

Whiston School closed in January 1961 due to a lack of capacity; as well as the cost of refurbishment and maintenance. The school buildings were demolished and the site is now a secluded cul-de-sac called 'Hollowgate' (which is also known as 'The Old School Yard'). It consists of five detached luxury properties on the site of what is now some of the most valuable real estate in the old part of the village.

School Hill

Whiston Junior and Infant School; Saville Road

Located in the centre of Whiston between Saville Road, Hungerhill Road, Dewhill Avenue and Reresby Road; pupils and staff transferred to this newly-constructed school in January 1961 to replace the previous school situated on School Hill. Whiston J&I was built to provide more space for an ever-growing number of children as the village continued to expand through the 20th Century. It was formally opened in September 1961 and celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 1986 with a commemorative mug.

Today the school's catchment area consists of central and western Whiston; including Whiston Vale and Guilthwaite Crescent (adjacent to Pleasley Road). It often has a single (albeit large) class per year group.

Children who attend this school most often progress on to Brinsworth Academy at Brinsworth for their secondary education; although some may choose to attend Oakwood High School on Moorgate Road; St Bernards Catholic High School on Herringthorpe Valley Road; or even Wickersley Secondary School and Sports College at Wickersley.

Whiston J&I is also the site of Whiston Pre-School for children aged 2 - 5 years.

Sitwell Infant School and Sitwell Junior School; Grange Road

Located on the Grange Estate between Grange Road, Broom Lane, Osbert Road and Renishaw Avenue; Sitwell opened in 1958 and consists of two separate schools occupying the same site: an Infant School and then a Junior School. Whilst physically joined, the two schools are mostly run seperately in order to cope with a greater number of pupils compared to Whiston J&I and Whiston Worrygoose J&I. At Sitwell, there is often two or three classes per school year. Therefore Sitwell has two seperate sets of staff and classrooms; plus two playgrounds; two staff rooms, and each has its own school hall. The two schools share a kitchen, caretaker and the playing fields surrounding the buildings.

Sitwell's catchment area consists of the whole of the Grange Estate as well as the Duke of Norfolk Estate in its entirety; and stretches as far up Moorgate Road as Rotherham Hospital; as well as across to Beaconsfield Road and Broom Lane.
